Moto Guzzi MGS-01 Triumphs at Daytona
In the opening race of the Battle of Twins Gianfranco Guareschi came home first aboard the Moto Guzzi MGS-01 # 88 (setting a new track record for the category) and came within a whisker of winning the Sound of Thunder category. Tomorrow will see Guareschi
One year after the success of Moto Guzzi at Daytona in 2006, the pair did it again. Their performance was simply spectacular and delighted the 40.000 spectators lining Florida’s best known track.
The day started with a timed session in which Guareschi stopped the clock at 1’50’’6. This was the second best time behind the Buell XBRR of Pete Strunk at 1\'50’’3.
Race 1 in Daytona is started with flags and not the usual traffic lights and Guareschi took the lead immediately, setting a pace that his rivals couldn’t match. The fact that he had built up such a lead over his nearest rivals made the Parma rider think it was still a warm-up lap and he slowed down on the straight where he was passed by two NCR Millonas ridden respectively by Larry Pegram and Valter Bartolini. Pegram kept the throttle open and increased the gap during the second lap while Bartolini was soon caught and passed by the MGS-01 #88 on braking before the Parabolica. On the third lap Guareschi launched an attack that was the decisive move of the race. He reeled in Pegram with a lap that saw a new track record (for the BOTT category): 1’46’’5.
Back in the lead Guareschi found himself in Bartolini’s sights and the duel that followed until the ninth lap drove the spectators ecstatic.
On the last lap Guareschi once again beat the 1’47’’00 barrier and gained the margin he needed to take the chequered flag exactly as he did in 2006.
At the end of the race Gianfranco Guareschi said: The MGS-01 is always a guarantee. Although this year we had new opponents and, despite my relative lack of experience on this type of track, I knew straightaway that a win was on the cards. I would specially like to thank Moto Guzzi who, apart from giving me this opportunity, provided me with all the back-up I could need from the USA branch of the Piaggio Group. This makes me even more proud to have won Daytona for Moto Guzzi.
Guareschi again this year lined up his MGS-01 in the Sound of Thunder category that also admits Superbikes. He finished second leaving most of his opponents in his wake. Tomorrow will see the second and last race in the Battle of Twins after which the Team Moto Guzzi-Guareschi will return home.
